Moth Face, Cabañas San Isidro

Published by jeff at 5:00 am under South America, butterflies & moths

Unidentified silk moth, Cabanas San Isidro, Ecudor

I scheduled this post to pop during my net-absence while I was running around the forests and waterways at Sacha Lodge over the weekend, but somehow I managed to bungle it. Here it is as I’m heading home.

I expected the birds in Ecuador to be amazing, but the moths have been an unanticipated treat. I’ll have more to say about them in the future, but here’s a quick start.  I liked this shot of a silk moth that came to my cabin light at Cabañas San Isidro–isn’t the fuzzy thorax wonderful? It’s worth clicking on the photo for a larger view.

Purists, take note: I rotated this photo 180 degrees because I thought it was easier to interpret, especially for those not used to staring into moth eyes. In reality, she (I’m guessing she because of thin antennae) was hanging from the wood, not sitting on top of it.

Beautiful shot, Jeff! And the detail at the larger size is amazing.

Can’t wait to see more from your adventures in Ecuador.

Such a pretty moth. Love the colors and lines.

I am not an expert in moths, so the female has thin antennae and the males have thicker ones? Neat!

Superb! Sooo glad you’re back home. Or, at least, in the 48.

Dear Jeff – I love your Moth photo – I found it while looking up places to stay in Ecuador.
What sort of camera and lens do you need to take a photo like that? I am a complete ignoramus re technical details but I do like taking photos of insects and moths so any input re gear required is appreciated.
