Postcards from Oaxaca I

Published by at 8:45 am under Birding,Central America,Travel

Hello and Happy New Year!

I’m in the middle of leading a tour with Chris Benesh for Field Guides, Inc., to Oaxaca, in southwest Mexico. I don’t have much time to write, but here are a few pictures you might enjoy:

The main plaza at the ruins of Monte Alban, above. Below, the ball court there.

Overhead, a Zone-tailed Hawk searches for less than vigilant lizards.

A Boucard’s Wren peers out from the surrounding thornscrub.

Nightime in downtown Oaxaca, with street vendors plying glowing toys.

While diners crowd the patio at Asador Vasco.

More when I get the chance. Have fun tonight and be careful!

    Happy New Year, Jeff!

The photos are awesome – thanks! I am jealous of your location at this exact moment since about 8 inches of new snow await us outside and must be cleaned up so we can get out for New Year’s Eve. I normally love winter but tonight???!

Looking forward to seeing more pictures and hearing about your birding activities in 2009! Enjoy!

I didn’t realize that Oaxaco (sp?) had those sorts of ruins – look just like my memory of the ones in Mexico City – both Aztec, I presume. We are about to take off for First Night – 19F out there. Enjoy the evening the the tropical temperatures.

Looks like a great place to be tonight.
