Best Day Ever
While the stock market was falling through the floor, Monday, 29 September saw the highest count ever of migrating raptors at the Cape Henlopen hawk watch–1048, to be precise. Above, some of the participants in the day’s count spell out “1000″ while I try to hustle Brecon and myself into the frame before the shutter fires. Left to right: Sue Gruver, Forrest Rowland, Ruth Draper, Sharon Lynn, me, and Brecon, who doesn’t care for hawks, but finds the so-called hawk watch platform to be excellent for an endless game of fetch with whomever he can talk into it.
Congratulations to all who were there for this great day and thanks to the many, many others who have supported the effort. Come on out and join us! I predict we’ll hit this mark at least once more this season…

Great hustle for both the photo and the count. Is Brecon an aussie?
Thanks for your comment on the Swainson’s thrush. I changed my label and would be glad to have details on the field marks you used.
I was up there on Sunday and it was very slow as the weather hadn’t changed yet. Forrest all but promised a good day on Monday and I wish I could have gone back then.
Also, I want to thank you for sharing all your great photos. I just got into trying to photograph wildlife here in Delmarva recently and am trying to learn the techniques to take photos even a fraction of the quality of yours. Please keep inspiring me!
What a nice photo from a great day! Brecon looks like he is having the time of his life. May it continue!
I had to laugh when I saw your title for this post. Just about every other day Arlo says, “This was the BEST DAY EVER!” It’s not usually for something as cool as hawk counts. More likely it’s because he got some candy;-)
Loving your posts and your great photography.
