Boy, I can't figure out why people have so much trouble with fall warblers...

Nice analysis, Jeff. I hope to retain at least some of your guidance next time I run into something like this!

Great help with a puzzler...we have been scratching our heads after running into a flock of 30 or so hatch year scruffy-looking things that turned out all to be Pine warblers, thanks to ID experts such as Julie Z (see comment above) and yourself. Your pictured bird is much cleaner looking than our messy lot. Thanks for the step-by-step lesson!

You really did a great job of pointing out all of the characteristics that make this a pine warbler. I did not realize I had the 4th photo until I went back and looked last night. Maybe it was a good thing that it came in the end of the process! I certainly learned alot.

Excellent writeup and analysis of this 'mystifying' fall warbler. I hope to see more of these types of entries throughout the year, very beneficial to the birding community and it beckons for more visits to your blog. Keep up the great work! Having some excellent pics to work with certainly helped!
